Pape Reservation is a 10 acre piece of land located off 3A in Cohasset. The conservation area is accessible from the Cohasset Water Treatment Facility parking lot. This is a very basic trail but does include access to Lily Pond and some quiet moments in the woods. Like many Cohasset and South Shore trails, you can expect to see some significant rock formations and stone walls criss-crossing the forest.
TRAILS:
The trails at Pape Reservation are fairly wide and clear of brush. Largely the paths consist of even terrain - but there are some parts with significant rocks that would make using a stroller very challenging. At the time of our visit, we also noticed at least 3 trees that had fallen across the trails. Cohasset Conservation Trust normally maintains great trails - so we are optimistic that these are not here permanently.
While this property hasn't been formally mapped, we have included our Strava history to help add context to the trail network at Pape Reservation. A hiking trail winds around the edge of Lily Pond and spur trails connect to the trails in the Brass Kettle Conservation Areas and the adjacent Trustee's Whitney-Thayer Woods. There are no trail markings so if you want to just see the pond, stay to the left at the two forks. (Note: Our Strava map doesn't include both spur trails - only one)
POINTS OF INTEREST:
The hiking trail leads to a nice view of Lily Pond.
HISTORY:
In 1990, the Trust voted to grant the Town of Cohasset significant funding to help the Water Commission forestall development of 10.45 acres into an 11-lot subdivision on King Street adjacent to the water treatment plant on Lily Pond. Proceeds from the Olde Salt House sale and a contribution from Mrs. A. Werk Cook partially funded the sale that was completed in 1993.
The property provides wildlife habitat and critical watershed protection for Lily Pond, Cohasset’s drinking water supply, and connects with the Brass Kettle Conservation Area.
