Although the South Shore might be best known for its beaches and coastal lifestyle, there is an abundance of Fall colors to be enjoyed with the return of Autumn. There is no reason to run North to Vermont and New Hampshire to take in the bright welcoming change of seasons. Whether you want to have a little quiet time or explore with family, we’ve selected 8 spots to enjoy the return of Fall. Grab a cider donut from Hornstra Farms and hit the trails!
Family Friendly
One of our favorite traditions is watching families and friends hike together. All of these trails come with good parking options. No unnecessary stress added!
- Turkey Hill - Cohasset // The top of Turkey Hill is one of the higher points on the South Shore which makes for an incredible view of the ocean. Ten miles of trails are accessible from several entry points. The big open field and picnic benches are perfect for your next family photo. After you’ve enjoyed a nice walk, check out Weir River Farm at the bottom of the hill. (Turkey Hill Ln, Hingham)
- Bay Farm Trails - Duxbury // Maintained jointly by Duxbury and Kingston, the 80 acre preserve provides incredible views of Kingston Bay, Myles Standish Monument, Gurnet Light and more. Bring your dog to enjoy a walk through the meadow and Cedar Grove before taking a rest along the Jones River salt marsh. Stop by Island Creek Oysters shop on the way and pick up a nice picnic. (Loring Street, Duxbury)
- Daniel Webster Wildlife - Marshfield // Maintained by the Mass Audubon Society, this 578 acre preserve has 3+ miles of trails of which a portion is ADA-compliant. Take the River Walk trail out to the furthest point for a peaceful view. Be sure to stop at the Observation blind on the way back to look at the birds. (Winslow Cemetery Road, Marshfield)
- Pathway - Norwell // One of the most stroller friendly options in the area, this 2-3 mile long path weaves through forests, along a boardwalk, and behind the town middle school and other public buildings. The majority of the trail is very level which makes it perfect for all activities including biking, running, and walking. There are several parking options including Donovan Fields on Circuit Street. The Fall leaves are particularly beautiful on the nearby boardwalk. (Circuit Street, Norwell)
Quiet Reflection
Quiet time is a great way to reconnect after a long week. Whether you want to find a nice bench to meditate on or hit the trails with your dog, we’ve got you covered.
- World’s End - Hingham // One of the most popular spots on the South Shore - but still plenty of opportunity for alone time. Although there are 5 miles of trails, the Rocky Neck section is the most peaceful. Plan to arrive earlier in the day to avoid any parking hassles. Entry is $6-8 without a Trustees membership. (Martin’s Lane, Hingham)
- John Little Conservation - Marshfield // There are many great trails along the North and South Rivers, but John Little is a favorite. The trail is about a mile long to the river and offers sweeping views of the water, marsh, and foliage. Take a rest on the bench and let the quiet soak in. (Union Street, Marshfield)
- Bates Lane - Scituate // This West End trail network is mostly dense forest crossing historic pasture lands. There are 6 trails that weave through the woods and around original farm stone walls. The Maxwell Trail can be challenging due to uneven terrain but offers a picturesque, peaceful stream for reflection. Parking is available on Clapp Road across from Bates Lane. (Clapp Road, Scituate)
- Tucker Preserve - Pembroke // Located along the Indian Head River, this Wildlands Trust property is just under 80 acres with a couple miles of trails. This site and nearby Luddham’s Ford were the former home to several mills, iron works, and a rubber factory at one time. Now, the land can be enjoyed either on the trails or via the water. There is a boat ramp available and fishing is permitted. (Old West Elm Street, Pembroke)
