Thankful for the Beautiful South Shore

Home / Thankful for the Beautiful South Shore

Each day that we get outside is a good day in our book – but sometimes it’s a fun reminder to think of why we are thankful for the beautiful South Shore.

FYI – We’ve rather intentionally left some of the most popular spots off our list like World’s End, Whitney Thayer, Two Mile Farm and Norris Reservation. They are all incredible spots (!!!) but… the parking lots are always full and there is more to explore on the South Shore.

(1) Spots with places for kids to run

Regardless of the season, sometimes kids just need to burn off some energy. You don’t need a big trail complex just enough open space and clear trails. Just make sure to check for ticks after.

(2) Hidden Gems

Like we’ve said before, we like a sweet spot that not everyone goes to. There are over 170 trails in our list and all of them are great… but some of them are a little more off the beaten path.

(3) Places close to good donuts

Do some walking… earn yourself a donut. That’s how this stuff works right? Plus, while there is nothing wrong with Dunkin Donuts in our book, there is something extra special about a locally made donut.

(4) Quick Walks

Even 5 minutes of fresh air is a win in our book. While you might not make your step goal for the day at these trails, they are wonderful quick hits and probably near one of your errand spots.

(5) Big woods

Have you heard of forest bathing? Here are a couple spots to just hang out in some deeper, quiet woods.

(6) Beautiful marsh and dune views

It’s hard to beat the picturesque water views of the South Shore. There are so many great trails along the North River in Marshfield and Norwell especially. Many of these options also provide a great opportunity to get on the water via kayak / canoe / paddleboard! We’ve got a list of many great spots that you can check out too.

(7) Places to explore with our furry dog friends

Not every trail welcomes your furry family members and those that do are not always the best fit. There are very few spots on the South Shore that enable off leash areas and most often require a town permit to do so. Stodder Neck is a Mass DCR property and is particularly welcoming to dogs!

(8) Great parking options

Is this the most important thing? Maybe not – but the last thing we all feel like doing is fighting for a parking spot or watching someone’s Facebook page to see the parking lot is closed for the day. Talk about a bummer.

and last but not least … (9) the people who care for them

We are forever grateful for nature Organizations and towns that take care of our open space like The Trustees, Mass Audubon and Wildlands Trust. You can support them via a membership and also by making sure you leave nature as nice as you found it.
