Stetson Meadows is a 184 acre conservation parcel in Norwell located along the North River. The area has a rich history dating back to 1634. Stetson Meadows is one of the more quite trails in Norwell - despite being located very near 3A. You'll have the opportunity to walk through the forest, along the marsh, and run through a field.
So pack a snack, some binoculars for birdwatching... and hit the trail.
TRAILS:
As reflected in the map, the trail system consists of several loops that offer different vistas. The benefit of all the separate loops is you can easily customize the length of your visit. While the terrain is not particularly level, it is level enough for kids to run around and trail running. There are not too many tree roots the way we've seen at other sites. Depending on how many loops you want to tackle, you can get anywhere from less than a mile to probably 3 miles.
Specific trails:
- Twin Pines trail = known for giant pines on either side of the trail
River Loop Trail = runs along the marsh and lined with big Beech trees
Stetson Trail = runs to the entrance road from the parking area
POINTS OF INTEREST:
- Picnic site - located right off the parking lot area in the field
- Many benches! - there are benches scattered through the conservation site. If you see one, take a seat. It'll be a great view.
- Kayak Launch - easy access to the marsh if you want to do some kayaking
HISTORY:
The Stetson Ford property was issued to Robert Stetson as a land grant in 1634. Robert Stetson was very involved in developing what is now known as the South Shore. He developed two saw mills that were instrumental in ship and dam building. He was also involved in acquiring Abington and Hanover and led a group of men in the King Phillips War.
Stetson Meadows was known as the 100 acre farm and remained in the Stetson family for 130+ years until Stetson's son Ebenezer's widow sold it to a shipbuilder, Michael Ford. The last family to own the 100 acre farm was the Mortons before it was sold to the town in 1972.
